Performance and driveability
The Tata Punch iCNG is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that runs on both CNG and petrol. In CNG mode, it produces 72 bhp and 103 Nm, while performance in petrol mode remains unchanged compared to the standard version.
The engine feels smooth and quiet at lower revs, only becoming noticeable when pushed beyond 5000 rpm. Power delivery is linear, making it easy to drive in everyday conditions.
It is available with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT transmission, with the AMT being a segment-first for a CNG-powered car.
In real-world driving, the CNG AMT offers smooth, linear acceleration, though gear shifts can feel slightly slow, requiring some planning for overtakes.
A unique highlight is the inclusion of segment-first paddle shifters, which provide better control over gear changes instead of relying entirely on the AMT system. While shifts are noticeable, they become smoother at higher speeds.
The suspension setup is well-tuned, offering a comfortable ride by effectively absorbing potholes, speed breakers, and uneven road surfaces.
In terms of refinement, the engine remains quiet under normal driving conditions, but cabin insulation could be improved, as some external noise filters inside.
The car features twin CNG cylinders positioned under the boot, helping maintain practicality without significantly compromising luggage space.

Q. The Tata Punch is priced like a hatchback but sold as an SUV — is the premium over the Tiago actually justified?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
Tata Punch price in India starts around ₹6–10 lakh (ex-showroom), and the ₹1–2 lakh gap over the Tiago buys you meaningfully more: 187mm ground clearance, a bolder design, 5-star NCAP safety, and a slightly elevated driving position that Indian buyers actively prefer. For buyers who drive on broken city roads or occasional village routes, the ground clearance alone makes the Punch a smarter daily tool. It's not just badge premium — the real-world usability difference is tangible.

Q. Can the Punch handle a proper highway drive, or does it run out of breath above 100 kmph?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The 1.2L Revotron petrol (86 PS) handles highway cruising up to 100–110 kmph comfortably, but sustained overtakes at high speed require patience, especially with 4 occupants. Mileage on the highway settles around 17–19 kmpl in real conditions, which is respectable. If highway driving is frequent, the CNG variant is excellent for economy, though its boot space takes a significant hit.

Q. How does the Punch actually feel to drive daily in a city like Bengaluru — practical or just a pretty face?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The Punch is one of the more practical micro-SUVs for daily city use — the tight turning radius, good visibility, and adequate boot (366 litres) make it genuinely usable. The tall body means more wind buffet on open roads versus a regular hatchback, but the trade-off in visibility and confidence on bad patches is clearly worth it for most urban buyers. Parking in tight city spots is manageable given its compact footprint.

Q. Should you pick the Punch over the Maruti Ignis or Hyundai Exter — what's the honest advice?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The Punch's 5-star NCAP rating versus the Ignis's unrated status settles the safety debate decisively. Against the Exter, it's a closer fight — Exter has a sunroof at comparable prices, but Punch holds a slight edge on build rigidity and Tata's improving service quality. If safety and road presence matter most, Punch is the clear pick; if feature-per-rupee is your metric, Exter competes hard.

Q. What are the real ownership headaches with the Punch after 2–3 years — anything that catches buyers off guard?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
Most Punch owners report smooth ownership, with maintenance costs around ₹4,000–7,000 per service. The AMT variant is generally reliable but can feel sluggish in quick stop-start traffic — the manual is the more engaging choice. One area to watch: the Punch's resale value is strong in Tier-2 cities, but in metros, the micro-SUV segment is getting crowded, which can slightly compress resale numbers at the 4–5 year mark.
