Q. Gurkha vs. Mahindra Thar—if I want a hardcore off-roader in 2026, which one is actually better for the mountains?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The Gurkha is the "surgical tool" for off-roading, while the Thar is the "lifestyle statement." The Gurkha features manual locking differentials on both front and rear axles as standard, plus a factory-fitted snorkel for 700mm water wading. It offers a much more comfortable, coil-sprung ride on broken mountain roads. The Thar wins on engine performance and tech, but for raw, mechanical reliability in deep slush or snow, the Gurkha is unbeatable.

Q. Is the new 5-door Gurkha a practical family car for city use?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The 5-door Gurkha (7-seater) is much more practical than the 3-door, but it remains a "hardcore" vehicle. It now features a 138 bhp engine and a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, but the hydraulic steering is heavy and the turning radius is large. It is a "destination vehicle"—perfect for taking the family to a remote campsite, but slightly tiring as a daily driver in bumper-to-bumper Kolkata or Mumbai traffic.

Q. What makes the Gurkha's suspension different from other ladder-frame SUVs?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
The Gurkha uses an independent double-wishbone setup at the front and a multi-link setup with a Panhard rod at the rear, all supported by coil springs. Unlike the leaf springs found in many utility vehicles, this setup allows for massive wheel articulation (keeping tires on the ground over rocks) and a surprisingly plush ride over "washboard" dirt roads.

Q. Is the 2.6L engine in the Gurkha underpowered compared to modern diesels?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
On paper, its 138 bhp seems low compared to the Thar's 172 bhp. However, the Gurkha's engine is tuned for "Low-End Torque." It produces 320 Nm from as low as 1400 rpm, allowing you to crawl up steep inclines without touching the accelerator. It isn't a highway sprinter, but it is a "mountain goat" that won't stall when things get technical

Q. How is the "After-Sales" experience for a Gurkha owner in 2026?
SIX BUY AND SELL TEAM • Apr 2026
Force Motors has expanded its "Gurkha-specific" service touchpoints, but they are still fewer than Mahindra's. Because the Gurkha shares many mechanical parts with the Force Traveller, parts are generally available even in remote towns. The "expert note" is to find a service center that specializes in Gurkhas, as the manual diff-locks and 4x4 transfer case require specific expertise to maintain.
